Time to Switch: The 'Unlimited' Marketing Myth

You may have heard: Mozy has just dropped their 'unlimited' backup plan. What used to be 'unlimited' storage for 4.95 $/month, is now 50 GB for 5.99$/month (for just one computer). This caused some major irritation among their customers.

It's no surprise: Storage and bandwidth have real costs. That is why we do not have an 'unlimited' plan; instead, we have a flexible price plan that fits your needs, with no bad surprises. Best of all: For about the same price as pure online backup, we offer the full range of online storage features:
  • automatic online backup for all your computers (not just one)
  • synchronization between multiple computers
  • sharing files with colleagues
  • collaboration in groups
What is most important and makes Wuala stand out: All files get encrypted directly on your computer, before they are uploaded. Since your password never leaves your computer, no one, not even we as the provider, can access your files.

Give it a try. Download Wuala here and sign up for the price plan that fits your needs.

  1. CrashPlan offer an unlimited plan, for an incredibly competitive price, for versioned backup.

As it stands Wuala's pricing is prohibitive for tasks such as storing an iTunes library in the cloud (personally, 200GB+) or a photographer's photos archive (in my case, 750GB+).

Ideally I would like to store my iTunes library in the cloud, with ~20% of it locally cached. That's not a sensible option with Wuala's current pricing.

In the future I would like to store my full photo library in the cloud, again with 20% locally cached. There's no way it would make sense to do that with Wuala's current pricing.

I do however currently backup both of those to CrashPlan for a very reasonable price.

  2. Hi sobri,

Thanks for your feedback. As far as I know, CrashPlan is solely for backing up your files and lacking additional features such sharing files directly or in groups and syncing files across multiple computers. Thus, Wuala covers all online storage needs.
I understand your concerns and I believe that in the end it is up to you where you want to store your files :)

    Cheers,
    Oona

  3. Yes, CrashPlan is purely backup. I recognise that your service provides much more than that, but I repeat that at the prices offered it is not reasonable to consider your service for storing things like music libraries or photo libraries, except for those with very small libraries or with large wallets.

I would expect to see your prices become more reasonable over time, perhaps driven by competition. As they currently stand they are not reasonable for all tasks but the most superficial.

That said, I am just about to pay up for your largest allotment (250GB). You are currently the only company I'm aware of providing this specific sort of transparent network storage with partial local caching (apart from one competitor offering an unstable solution with an uncertain future). As such it is a service that I have no choice but to use.

Looking forward to future competition and more sane pricing.
