Tutorial: The Difference Between Backup and Sync

In our previous postings I've explained how to set up an automatic backup and a sync folder. As there has been some confusion in terms of the difference between the two folders, let's have a look at them in detail.

The Backup Folder
A backup will save the files stored in your local source computer directly to Wuala.
This job will be done automatically, depending on the time you have set in your backup settings. The aim of this feature is to create an additional copy of your files in case your computer gets stolen or crashes. Therefore, you cannot edit the files in Wuala. You can only edit the files in your local folder.

The Sync Folder
A syncronisation allows you to synchronize a Wuala Sync folder between multiple computers. You can connect as many computers as you want. Edits in the local folder will be transmitted to every computer which is connected to the Wuala Sync folder. All changes will be updated instantly. Further, you can also add files to your Wuala Sync folder and have them appear on all your connected computers. Note: If you delete a file in your local folder, the files will be deleted in the Wuala Sync folder and on all connected computers. However, the files will not be lost. You will be able to restore them from the Wuala Trash.

In addition to setting up a sync folder for yourself, you can also sync files in groups. Be cautious though and only sync files with contacts you know.

Don't forget: Backup is used to create an additional copy of your files . You only have read access. Sync is used to create a workspace enabling you to have identical local folders on all your computers.

  1. Is there a post explaining which free storage is permanent and which one volatile?

  2. Hi amarendra,

When you sign up you get 1 GB for free which you can keep for your whole life. All other storage has an expiration date which you can see in your settings by clicking on storage.

  3. When I have a synced folder, is it also backed up? In the rare case of all my computers with the synced folder breaking at the same time, a new pc with wuala can download the shared files without access to all the previous sync pc's?

  4. Hi Remy,

A backup is a copy of your files in Wuala which cannot be edited. If you sync files, you can change those files on Wuala and on the other computers.
This means that all files in a sync folder are available on Wuala and can be accessed through Wuala.
In case you delete your sync files, they will be moved to the trash in Wuala. You can restore the files form the trash again.

I hope this makes it more clear.

    Cheers,
    Oona

  5. Hello,

A backup setting should keep saved documents on Wuala servers even if theses documents are deleted from the computer. It seems it does not like that in Wuala, at least for me.

I tagged a file, lets say "BCKP-01", to be backed-up by Wuala. It contains Doc1, Doc2 and Doc3. Wuala copy these on its servers.

If I delete Doc1 and Doc2 and add Doc4 and Doc5, Wuala will add the latest two documents but send Doc1 and Doc2 to the trash. That's a sync, not a back-up.

Although the setting of my file (on Wuala) was supposed to be a back-up, it keeps itself in sync with my BCKP-01 file on my PC.

In other words, you can't keep files on Wuala that you do not keep on your PC. I'm I right?

  6. Hello,
is it possible to convert a backup folder to a sync folder?

  7. Just to clarify:

When I have a synchronized folder, there's no need to backup it because it is possible to restore older versions of files with the time travel feature, correct?

    Thanks

  8. Yes, files in the sync folder will also be verionized. Just use the time travel function or "open previous version..." from the menue.

An additional vbackup task for the same local folder can be used to create "Snapshot" to a givven time if wanted.

@Torsten: It is not possible to convert between sync and backup, but you can just create a new job. The files won´t be uploaded a second time.

@Gauthier: Wuala Backup will update the folder to the status of your local folder with every backup run. The files will be still available with the time travel function as long as you do not empty the trash.

  9. @Bernd: I just noticed this only works for versioning, but not for restoring deleted files!

So a backup is still required additional to the syncing! I was first under the impression that the sync feature makes the backup obsolete.

  10. To support Eric's question: Why would I Backup anything if Sync already does supposedly the same that Backup does PLUS the ability keep files in multiple computers? Is there any differences other than limited functionality?

  11. Thanks. Is it possible to have my main Wuala account on my desktop computer running all day, but my laptop NOT being logged in, and STILL have the sync folder synced? In other words, if I go to my laptop, do I have to log in to Wuala to save a file to the sync folder, and then will I be able to see ALL of my Wuala account files from the desktop backups etc, on the laptop?

I only want laptop users to be able to see the one sync'd folder, not all of my folders.

    Thanks!

  12. If I create a sync on my PC1 (source) where does the sync copy of the file will be physicaly located in PC2 (destination) ?
    On drive "C:" ?
    Thanks

  13. Anybody out there? This is a privacy and safety concern for me. Thanks...

  14. Hey Freddy

Unfortunately this is not possible, you have to have Wuala running to sync/backup your files, otherwise this will not work. We are searching for an easy solution for this.

  16. Does Android application support real two-way sync in the background?

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1) Is the Sync file backed-up? The marketing materials & blog answers seem to say that the user must choose between backing-up files OR syncing files but not both for the same files.
    2) Is the storage expiration date absolute or extended through renewal?

  18. @Antony
Our Android Dev has real support on it's list.

    @Anonymous
The sync file is automatically saved to the cloud. When you choose to delete the file locally, it gets deleted in the cloud as well (moved to the trash).
The storage expiration is absolute, you get reminded 1 month before and can renew your storage if you like. This process is not done autimatically currently.
