Tutorial: How To Setup Sync

With our recent update it is easy to backup your files automatically and keep your files up to date on all your computers, regardless if you're working in the office or at home. The following posting will show you how to sync your files online and across multiple computers with just a few clicks.

Setting Up Sync
1. Cick on the green 'New' button and choose 'Sync'.

2. A window will open. Click on 'Select folder'.

3. Choose the folder you want to sync and click on 'Open'.

4. Wuala will have assigned a folder on Wuala by default. Click on 'Select folder' if you do not agree with the default folder.

5. Choose the Wuala folder where you want to create your sync folder and click on 'Ok'.

6. Click on 'Ok' to create your sync folder. You can now edit and add files directly on your local computer or edit and add them to your Wuala account All files will be updated accordingly on Wuala and on your local computer.

Adding Additional Sync Folders
As soon as you log in to Wuala on another computer, you will receive the following dialog asking you if you want to sync the folder on Wuala to your local computer.
Click on 'Choose folder' to define a specific local folder. Your files are now up to date on every computer. Files that are added on one computer, are automatically accessible on your other computer.

Sync Indicators
The sync indicators give you direct feedback if your files have been synced or not. A green tick tells you that your files have been successfully synced, while the blue icon indicates that your files are currently being synced. As a Window user, you will even see this indicator in the Windows Explorer.

In tomorrow's blog posting I will explain the difference between backup and sync. Stay tuned.

  1. Than't fine, but please add the feature to sync from the cloud to the local storage. In case if I'd like to have a local backup of my cloud storage.

  2. Hi Vagif,

I'm not quite sure if I understood your request. You would actually want a backup, however, a backup from the cloud direct to your local drive? Did I get this right?

  3. Hi,

why isn't it possible to sync a folder within a synced folder?
Example: I'm sycing the hole folder "documents" at home, dont wanna have the hole folder at work, only one subfolder.
That would improve the sync-function and make me happy :)

  4. @Oona,
What Vagif means, reverse the direction of the sync/backup too. I make a backup of my data in Wuala too, on a local hard drive. Why? The Wuala's T&C state that LaCie is allowed to stop the service without prior notice.

I would like to add another sync feature: Sync an existing Wuala folder with data. What I have to do today is move the data from Wuala to my local disk, define the sync, and then the data is moved (via sync) to Wuala. Simply because sync expects an empty target location initially. Why not skip the first step and let the user chose to combine the data and folders on both sides to one, and bring that into sync.

  6. Hi
I can see a few synced folders with a violet Sync Indicator with an X in the middle. What's the meaning of this indicator?

    Thank you. Patrick

  9. I'd like to access Wuala through XeroBank or other such "anonymous" VPN services. Can Wuala clients be configured so that they'll only connect through the VPN? Although I do realize that one could do so though firewall rules, I'm looking for a simpler solution. Thank you.

  10. I´m sorry, but there is no general answer. I assume Wuala should work with activated compatibility mode which deactivate the use of udp and restrict the use of ports in most cases. But it depend on the integration of the vpn into your system.

  11. is it possible to sync a folder on two of three computers, but not at all on the third?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hi skrite dot net,

Yes, this is possible. When you log in to the third computer, be sure to only select the folders you want to have synced on your third computer.
See also the section 'Adding Additional Sync Folders'.

  13. If I am not mistaken, the Android client does not provide "sync" capability (actually, it is the only reason I am still using Dropbox). Am I right, and if so, are there plans to add this feature?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hi Blotosmetek,

Thanks for your comment. Yes, you are correct, the Android client does not provide the sync capability. However, you may still access your sync folder on Wuala. For the moment, sync is not planned.

  15. Oona,

We are a group of colleagues that would like to create a set of folders with documents that we can a) all automatically sync to a folder on our own computer and b) that allows us all to read/write/copy/update/add/delete files.

How do we set this up? We are struggling to work this out.

Note that this posting is not up to date anymore, we will rewrite this topic next week. However, I hope this will help you in the meantime.

  17. How does a "synched" folder affect my Wuala storage total? I'm familar with Windows Live Synch (which no longer supports XP) and Dropbox (which is like a combination of Wuala Synch & Backup). Wiht Dropbox for instance I am limited in the amount I can synch on each computer by the total space I have in Dropbox in the cloud.

I'm hoping that Wuala synch is more like Windows Live sync which synched between the computers but did NOT add the files to the cloud.

    Look forward to your reply,
    Larry

  18. Hi,

It seems like that if I delete a snyced folder/file in the Wuala App, that it is not deleted in the sync counterpart on my harddrive. This would mean that the sync is just one way, is that correct? Is it planed that the sync happens in all possible directions? I just moved all my data from dropbox to wuala, but this would definitiely be a reason to reverse that. On Dropbox, it does not mater where I do the change (one of my computers, ios devices or online on the homepage) all changes are replicated to all the devices and in the cloud?

And another issue, why do some folders stay in the state with the violett "x", even tough the last change is hours back?

    thanks
    Andi

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hi Andi,

    Thanks for your comment.

The violett "x" indicates that there is a problem with your sync. This is the reason the files have't been deleted. Sync is generally "two-ways". Please open the sync-overview window and select your computer in the sync entry. An error message should be shown.
In case this does not help, feel free to contact our Support Team at support@wuala.com.

  20. Hi Oona,

Several reviews mention that the sync option is only available on the paid plans (e.g. Smallcloudbuilder review), and not on the free 1GB-plan. However, I see no reference of this mentioned on Wuala's website.

    Is this correct?

    Thanks,
    Jai

  21. Hi Jai,

This was correct, but is not anymore.
Sync and backup can be used by everyone now.

    Cheers,

  22. @ppoetsma, Vagif

There is a workaround, that is a lot faster than moving the cloud data to local storage. Just move the cloud data to a temporary folder in the cloud, then set up the sync, and move the data back. This data will then be synced to the local drive.

  23. Hello,

I was wondering: Is there any way not to sync folders, but just single FILES?
Namely I'm speaking of the sync of my address books on OSX with Wuala, and there the file "AddressBook-v22.abcddb". When I sync the whole folder "AdressBook" in my library folder, then i have many conflict-files all the time.

    That would help much.
    Tobias

  24. Hi Tobias,

Unfortunately, you cannot just sync single files, I am sorry,

    Best, Oona

    ReplyDelete
  25. @Tobias:
A possible workaround could be to have a local backup process copying your database file to another folder, which you make a Wuala sync'ed folder.
At least this works for me with my local Outlook archive files which I want to have available on other computers as well.
However, you'll need a way to do the local copy. On my PC I use an add-on from Microsoft, on the Mac some workflow with the Automator tool might work - but I do not have any experience in using that.
    Hope, this helps?

  26. @Oona:
Can you tell me what happens if I sync a Wuala folder with a folder on my computer that is not empty? Wuala gives me a warning, that the files will be merged.
Currently, both folders contain the same data. But I am a little hesitant to do the sync, because I don't know whether in the end I will then have each file twice...
    I'd appreciate your help.

    Cheers,

  27. Hi i have the same question that Larry had, and never got replied (that i can see at least). The sync function works directly detween computers (like Live Sync) or uploads the files first to the cloud and then syncs (and in this way i can only sync files to the account limit?)
For me this is a "deal breaker" in using the tool, since i want to sync lots of GB, but do not really need to back them up...

  28. Hey there

We currently don't have LAN sync, that means that the files first get uploaded to the cloud and then synced to your device.

We're working on the LAN sync feature though.

  29. HI !

I'm a new user, and the sync function is why I chose Wuala.

But I don't understand when the sync is made : I have a local folder, and I sync it in Wuala. The first time, Wuala sync all the folder, all is correct : I see the folder in Wuala. But if I add a new local subfolder in the synced folder, Wuala don't synchronize it : I don't see the new subfolder in the folder on Wuala. Why ?

    Thierry.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The sync function is potentially very useful. However, the first attempt at using it, it came up short. Almost all of the files in the chosen local sync folder were correctly copied into the designated Wuala sync folder, but not all files were copied. This is on Linux. An rsync shows missed files, in particular a missing "dot" file did not get picked up in the Wuala sync.

  32. Dear Wuala Team. Thanks for this backup and sync solution. I am currently examining to use Wuala instead of iDisk or Dropbox. Seems I always have to start Wuala to get the sync started. I know this can be automatically done. However, I hoped for a more integrated solution like iDisk. Can you update me on possible developments?

  34. Dear Wuala Team,
I sync-ed a folder on a computer. That computer crashed, I can't use it anymore. How can I delete this computer from the sync list? If I go to the sync overview and click on the sync-ed folder, in the list of computers this (old, crashed) computer appears, but can't be removed. I'm only allowed to deactivate the sync with the computer I'm using now - what I do not want.
    Thanks a lot!
