Our newest release Hirslanden brings along some very important improvements.
The greatest change is the new base storage. That means that every user has their quota increased from 1 GB to 2 GB free online storage as default.
Following our strategy of being the most secure and comprehensive online
storage, we wanted to increase security and therefore we are in process of switching from AES-128 encryption to AES-256 encryption.
But there are even more improvements for the new release. We are introducing an improved storage system (currently disabled by default) that will allow:
- Incremental file updates (meaning that small changes in a large file do not result in uploading the whole file again)
- Increased file size limit up to 100 GB
- Multiple concurrent downloads
- More stability
- Better performance (less CPU and disk usage during up- and downloads)
You can view the Release Notes for Hirslanden here
Also from this release - Trading and most of the enthusiastic customer base no longer supported. https://forum.wuala.com/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=2231
ReplyDeleteevery enterprises does not display disadvantages ^^
ReplyDeleteBad choices!
ReplyDeleteYou will soon be forgotten and gone from the market.
How can you have incremental uploads when the files are encrypted on the user's machine? Wouldn't the encryption make the uploaded file change completely even though in the original file only some bits might have changed?
ReplyDeleteIncremental file updates (meaning that small changes in a large file do not result in uploading the whole file again)
ReplyDeleteGREAT
Trading --> gone?? Why the heck are you doing this? Please explain, and explain good because many wuala-users will be quite angry hearing this bad news!
ReplyDeleteThe new system does not encrypt files as a whole, but in independent pieces of 4 MB each. So if piece number 67 of a large file changes, only that piece needs to be uploaded again.
ReplyDeleteAlright. Thanks for your reply.
Nocheinmal: Sehr sehr schade...
I posted a short essay responding to the removal of the Trading feature/service from Wuala. It's on the forum here: https://forum.wuala.com/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=2257
ReplyDeleteWuala is so much better than other services. And why? Because of trading.
ReplyDeleteThe business model of LaCie is to sell hardware. The business model of Wuala is to utilize unused computer resources and become a Skype of cloud storage. LaCie bought Wuala and the weight of the established hardware business is much higher than the prospect of becoming a major force in cloud storage. So the hardware business prevailed and the main differantiator of Wuala - storage trading - was stopped. Time to look for a Wuala replacement.
ReplyDeletesehr sehr schade. trading war DAS feature von wuala. ich werde mich von wuala verabschieden.
ReplyDeleteIm a bit disappointed that Wuala did not communicate a feature removal transparently. I actually expected better from you guys.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I will remain a loyal customer as I think that I prefer to have my data stored at Wuala and not anywhere in the cloud, so hopefully the speed of access will accelerate. I still think Wuala is the best cloud storage on the market.
Thank you - but please go public and be transparent and frank if there will be bad news again. It's suits better to you and above all, it's better for your image.
eyeIT
So wuala is not a p2p system anymore? What sets it apart from the rest of the cloud storage ratrace? This is an unfortunate step backward...
ReplyDeleteThe end of Wuala...
ReplyDeleteIt was to good to remain true :-(
NOTE: "Increasing" my quota to 2G from my previous quota of 13G with trading is NOT "more storage for everyone!" It's less. Your marketing department is asleep.
ReplyDeleteSorry to see this feature going away. I was already not trusting online storage, this does not improve matters. I will be looking into other alternatives that doesn't make my computer slow and buggy.
ReplyDeleteGood that Trading will Not Be supprted. As a business user i will Never use private owned Storage. For me encryption is The reason to use wuala
ReplyDeleteThis is the step towards death of Wuala. The team is already decimated. I have a better alternative for my files, maybe I will give another chance to DROPBOX since Wuala does not present any advantages.
ReplyDeleteWhat's really disappointing here is not that the trading feature was removed, but the communication and transparency of it. Surely, this was in the works for a while and should have been communicated well before springing a surprise on your customers. The single most important factor when picking a backup solution is trust. Surely, Wuala, you can see that you've lost that.
ReplyDeleteOne step to regain that trust would be to provide free lifetime backup storage equal to the amount a user had been trading, instead of just for one year. A user can then believe that Wuala is a backup solution to be trusted and not purely in it for the money.
Glad that trading has been removed. That's a definite plus for me.
ReplyDeleteI would not jump ship directly to non-encrypted-open-for-any-US-official-and-staff-Dropbox.
ReplyDeleteWuala still performs encryption locally, and with the incremental file-upload (which I believe you have to enable with some command line switch) should also be faster.
However I am not very happy with the (updated) Wuala terms and conditions [http://www.wuala.com/en/about/terms] including: "3.5. In case of a violation of these Terms, LaCie may limit, block, terminate or delete your Account without notice". How can you know if you are in violation? Well, your account has been shut. One of the ways you can be in violation is by being over your quota, another is by "participate in any group that encourages violation of LaCie’s terms and policies" - so if you are a member of a political party that one day (without your knowledge) decides that they want to encourage such a thing, then your Wuala account can in theory be shut overnight.
With no stated option for regress (except claiming money back from the credit card company, of course) this does not sound like a trustworthy backup/sharing solution for important and private business and personal data, which for me was the main motivation for using Wuala.
You mean you went from the Trading functionality that allowed to get for FREE 100's of GB to NO trading w/only 1 GB to now to 2GB.
ReplyDeleteBut thanks for increasing the file limit to 100 GB! It's so practical when you have 2 GB of storage :)
When I need more storage I am happy to pay for it. I suspect most of those who complain about the removal of trading were not paying customers anyway.
ReplyDeleteWow. Trading is the reason I recently joined Wuala and I guess now that it's gone, there is no reason to use it.
ReplyDeleteBye Wuala.
If you do some changes to independent piece which makes the piece get bigger than the 4MB, how do you handle this? Is there a new piece which is inserted, but doesn't have the full length or do you then have to encrypt the entire file again?
